Market Overview

Demand for Blood Transfusion Services Increases but Donor Numbers Remain Low

While the demand for blood transfusion services in Indonesia has been steadily increasing, the number of blood donors in the country remains low compared to its massive population. This could be attributed to the lack of adequate infrastructure and the excessive reliance on repeat blood donors. Though the centralized blood banking system of the Indonesian Red Cross has effectively managed to maintain low blood transfusion costs for patients, budget constraints have prevented it from upgrading its facilities throughout the country to separate blood components such as plasma and platelets. As a result, around 70 percent of blood transfusions in the country use whole blood, resulting in inefficiency in the usage of blood.

Nevertheless, there are definite signs that the blood banking and plasma product market in Indonesia is on the upswing. The need for more effective usage of donated blood is likely to be one of the key drivers of the market. Moreover, the Government has been making sustained efforts to reinstate donors’ and patients’ confidence in blood transfusion services, following reports of an increase in the collection of contaminated blood over the last two to three years. "Suppliers to the blood banking and plasma products market can, therefore, look forward to increased opportunities in this emerging sector within the Indonesian healthcare industry," says the analyst of this research service.

Stabilizing Economy to Boost Growth of Market

Indonesia’s large and expanding population as well as the growing demand for blood and blood components are expected to contribute to greater demand in the blood banking and plasma product market. Frost & Sullivan expects the Indonesian economy to perform better over the next few years, with increased stability in the political situation attracting more investors into the country. These factors are expected to lead to enhanced funding for the Indonesian Red Cross, which is currently struggling with limited budgets.

"An improving economy and increasing supply constraint are expected to help the Indonesian Red Cross gain access to better funding," says the analyst. "This will enable more of its blood transfusion centers to be equipped with blood filtration facilities." In addition, rising public demand for safer blood donation and transfusion services are likely to create a strong case for more automated blood collection devices, as well as lead to the increased use of leukocyte reduction filters.
