Market Overview—Definitions

Product Definitions:

A PD pump is defined as a device that moves fluid by trapping a fixed amount of the fluid and then displaces that trapped volume into a discharge pipe. For the purpose of revenue calculation, the first point of sale is included, which is revenue generated by the manufacturer. Motors, pump parts, and after-sales services are not variables in revenue calculation. The different types of PD pumps covered in this study are defined as follows:

Rotary Pumps: This PD pump uses two meshed rotating parts or one stator and one rotor to force fluid into a smaller space. The rotary pumps segment is comprised of:

• Gear pumps
• Lobe pumps
• Progressive Cavity and Screw pumps
• Vane pumps

Reciprocating Pumps: A reciprocating pump uses a piston driven by a crankshaft or a diaphragm to deliver fluids using high pressure. Reciprocating pumps include piston pumps and diaphragm pumps.

Peristaltic Pumps: The fluid is contained within a flexible tube fitted inside a pump casing. As the pump’s rotor turns, part of its tube is compressed, forcing the fluid to be pumped out of the tube.
