Market Overview

Sustainable Demand for Crop Protection Chemicals to Spur Growth in the Sub-Saharan African Crop Protection Chemicals Market

Agriculture accounts for almost thirty per cent of Sub-Saharan Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP), as well as seventy percent of the population’s livelihood. Consequently, most governments are encouraging growth in the agricultural sector. All product segments in this market are anticipated to experience significant growth in the long-term, particularly in the insecticides product segment, as the weather conditions are conducive to insect growth. "On one hand, the total crop protection chemicals market is only two to four per cent of the global crop protection chemicals market," says the analyst of this research. "On the other hand, sustainable demand for chemicals, along with the pressure on farmers to provide more food for a growing population, is expected to spur market growth."

However, there are formidable industry challenges such as counterfeit pesticides and negative perceptions of pesticide usage. Counterfeit products can have devastating effects on the crops and on farmers’ and farm workers’ health. "Insufficient regulations, often resulting in complete crop losses and small-scale farmers losing their income, are the cause for Illegal imports and counterfeit pesticides," explains the analyst. "The source of such pesticides is difficult to trace."

Governments play a pivotal role in combating the scourge of counterfeit pesticides by enforcing stringent regulations. "Suppliers and industry regulators such as CropLife International and Agrochemical Associations should ensure product quality and reliability," concludes the analyst. "Educating and training farmers and farm workers is vital to reduce the prevalence of illegal pesticides."
