| Countries covered: Global Spectrum Analyzers Spearhead Growth in the World General Purpose Test Equipment Markets Growth in the spectrum analyzers and network analyzers markets has enabled the world general purpose test equipment markets to shift into forward gear. In light of the economic downturn, the communications sector is expected to witness a slight decline during the short term. However, this is unlikely to have a strong impact on the general purpose test equipment markets. Long-term evolution (LTE) is slated to be the next-generation cellular technology to drive the telecommunication industry. LTE, which is an extension of third generation (3G), has been nurtured by test vendors to be implemented and deployed over high speed packet access (HSPA) or 3G technologies. “Several regulations governed from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have generated the need for sophisticated test equipment in the telecommunications industry,” notes the analyst of this research service. “The need for low-cost wireless communication, worldwide inter-operability for microwave access (WiMAX), and 3G applications has bolstered the need for licensed networks, which in turn is boosting demand for spectrum analyzers.” The radio frequency (RF) range of spectrum analysis below 6GHz and the microwave sector (6-18GHz) have helped rev up market revenues. Factors such as higher speed, more ports to address, higher level of integration, and multiple interfaces are fueling the market momentum. The future growth of the general purpose test equipment markets rests largely on the combinational testers that are being developed. Electronic counters are increasingly becoming complementary products in today’s marketplace and likely to remain at the forefront of market development, going forward. Product Miniaturization and Integration Dictate Market Direction Miniaturization and integration of products have necessitated data transfer at higher bandwidth speed. Until recently, stand-alone test equipment was the norm in the general purpose test equipment markets. However, the preference for more sophisticated test equipment with multifunctional testing capability has been responsible for the shift in market direction toward integrated test equipment. This has reined in the progress of the individual/stand-alone test equipment market. The demand for higher frequencies has driven application-specific needs for multiple input and multiple output environments. Some designs entail testing at a higher frequency for harmonics and modulation. The need for RF testing has been on the rise. Moreover, device complexity is constantly escalating, creating a high barrier to entry in the market for test vendors. It is difficult for new companies to foray into this arena, particularly the high-end segment. In addition, competing with the traditional tier-one vendors that have a strong foothold in the market is a daunting task for new entrants. Customers’ demand for greater functionality at a lower cost has further enhanced competition among test vendors. The challenge for vendors is to squarely meet the end-user demands and retain their loyalty despite the rivalry in the marketplace. To obtain the cutting edge, vendors must incorporate a versatile array of additional features and functions. Savvy end users expect nothing less than the products that combine cost effectiveness and high efficiency. A key trend that has been identified is the establishment of alliances by vendors with new entrants that offer niche solutions, thereby expanding their portfolio. This will open avenues of opportunity for them and uplift their status in the market. |
