This study includes a complete analysis of key market drivers, restraints, and trends in the market. Finally, it provides strategic solutions to the vendors to gain advantage in the growing market. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: DNA microarrays, Real-time PCR, RNAi.

Market Sectors

Expert Frost & Sullivan analysts thoroughly examine the following market sectors in this research:
  • Clinical diagnostics
  • Drug discovery
Technologies

The following technologies are covered in this research:
  • DNA Microarray: A DNA microarray is a collection of microscopic DNA spots attached to a solid surface such as glass, plastic or silicon chip forming an array. Scientists use DNA microarrays to measure the expression levels of large numbers of genes simultaneously. The affixed DNA segments are known as probes, thousands of which can be used in a single DNA microarray.
  • Real-time PCR: Higuchi and co-workers at Roche developed a system in which PCR products can be detected in real-time, so that the accumulation of PCR products could be visualised at each cycle using an intercalating dye such as ethidium bromide, an ultraviolet source and a CCD camera, also referred to as kinetic PCR.
  • RNAi: RNA interference is a recently discovered functional tool. This is a phenomenon where an RNA, introduced to a cell, ultimately causes the degradation of the complementary cellular mRNA and leads to the shut down of gene activity.
Market Overview

High Throughput and Multiplexing Capabilities to Drive Expansion of Gene Expression Solutions in Drug Discovery

The revolution in the drug discovery process has been driven by the belief that proteomics will facilitate a better understanding of basic life science processes and thus deliver a high number of drug targets, candidate drugs and novel therapeutics. Advances in understanding cancer biology, human genetics, disease pathogenesis and molecular pharmacology hold great promise for the discovery of new approaches to treat cancers. Progress and expectation have been heightened by initiatives such as the human genome project and technological advances that permit genome-wide analysis of cancer cells and facilitate the synthesis and high throughput screening of selected compounds against defined targets.

Some of the major factors driving the expansion of gene expression markets in Europe are the results of high throughput capabilities, increased automation, cost-effectiveness and improved multiplexing capabilities. "Within the realm of drug discovery and development, gene expression helps develop new therapeutics, identify early warning signs of disease and even sub-classify patients based not on symptoms, but on abnormal changes observed in their specific cells," notes the analyst of this research service. "This can lead to the creation of new diagnostic tests and benefit the field of personalised medicine." Although microarrays and other platforms are becoming standard tools for high-throughput analysis of gene expression, nonarray techniques serve to identify and isolate new transcripts to expand knowledge of basic science, as well as create new diagnostics and identify better targets for drug discovery. Techniques that offer multiplexing and enable scientists to screen a large number of genes from a sample simultaneously are becoming increasingly important. Multi-gene patterns of expression can provide a hint of common regulation mechanisms and genes showing similar expression are likely to be related.

Cost-effective Pricing Crucial for Market Growth

The collection, organisation and analysis of large amounts of biological data, using networks of computers and databases has resulted in data explosion, thereby requiring robust infrastructure to streamline drug discovery processes. Data comparison across platforms is also required, as some laboratories may need to score indigenous microarrays with the equipment and accessories from the commercial sector. Further, to combat issues related to gene expression data validation, data obtained will need to undergo sufficient biological repeat experiments to corroborate findings and secure statistically relevant information.

"While microarrays, PCR and RNAi have gained significance in the micro technology era, adding value to the changing paradigm of drug discovery, the major question is whether these technologies are cost effective," remarks the analyst. " Although the potential for drugs to reach faster to the market is apparent, their premium pricing does not justify the use of some of these technologies for routine processes." In this scenario, reliable and consistent date will boost the willingness of the industry to invest. In addition, laboratory automation is likely to promote a faster approach to the preliminary steps, which involve reagent mixing and sample preparation. These processes demand skilled labour and time, thereby indirectly influencing the pricing of gene expression products. Hence, developing the automation process will allow manufacturing processes to become more cost-effective, which will facilitate a reduction in prices.
