This study’s research objective is to gauge the usage of building technologies and physical security technologies within United States retail chains. The data was collected in August 2011, using a web-based survey. The sample consisted of 182 managers. The study examines technologies including access control systems: keypads, card readers, and analog video surveillance that help minimize threats such as shoplifting. Also covered are technologies used in retail premises, including fire suppression and detection, HVAC, energy management, and remote monitoring systems.

Research Objectives: To measure and describe key trends of physical security and building technologies in the retail industry within the United States.

Methodology: Web-based survey

Sample: 182 United States managers responsible for building technologies/ physical security within retail facilities (supermarket chain, retail chain, or department store chain) with at least five stores. Specifically, all xxx are responsible for building technologies, whereas slightly fewer (xxx) are responsible for physical security.
