A good example is Amgen’s Aranesp, which is a longer-lasting version of the company’s EPO product. Before Aranesp, the only alternative to EPO was a blood transfusion that was not only expensive and painful but also put the patient at the risk of contracting other diseases such as HIV. Aranesp scores over both blood transfusions and regular EPO treatment by changing the dosage schedule from three times to once a week and improving the quality of life for dialysis patients.

Side-Effect Profiles of Blood Growth Factor Therapies Delay FDA Approval

Gaining the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can prove to be a daunting task.
