Nutraceuticals

US demand for nutraceuticals will grow nearly seven percent annually. Herbal and related extracts will grow the fastest based on expanding scientific evidence of health benefits and the rising popularity of alternative medicines. Nutrients and functional additives will also generate strong sales gains, spurred by ongoing advances in the quality of ingredients. This study examines the $1.9 billion US nutraceuticals industry. It presents historical data (1989, 1994, 1999) and forecasts to 2004 and 2009 by nutraceutical type (e.g., vitamin C, vitamin E, B-group vitamins, electrolytes, calcium, proteins, fibers, caloric agents, isoflavones, ginkgo biloba, St. John's wort, ginseng, garlic, echinacea, melatonin); and by end-use application (e.g., specialty nutritional products, dietary supplements, fortified foods and beverages).
