US demand to exceed 25 billion units by 2012
US demand for cosmetic and toiletry containers is projected to exceed 25 billion units in 2012. Container advances will reflect continued solid growth in cosmetic and toiletry product shipments, driven by favorable domestic demand and opportunities for US-produced cosmetics and toiletries in offshore markets. Other factors driving unit growth include a steady rate of new product introductions; a broadening array of products aimed at babies, children, men, teens and younger adults; favorable population age distribution trends and above-average growth in ethnic population groups; the positioning of innovative oral care products as cosmetic essentials in addition to their oral hygiene benefits; and more stringent airline security regulations with regard to carry-on toiletries. Healthy expansion in the over-55 population will fuel robust sales of products such as skin creams and lotions offering anti-aging benefits, as well as non-drying skin cleansers. Value gains will outpace unit growth, largely due to the importance of packaging as a selling point, especially with prestige brands and upscaled mass market brands.

Additional Information

Plastic to be fastest growing container material
Plastic will register the fastest growth through 2012 in both units and value. Growth will be aided by healthy shipment expansion in a number of key plastic container applications, such as hair and skin care products and cosmetics. In addition, advances will be supported by plastic’s performance characteristics, processing improvements and relatively favorable cost structure. Despite the overall maturity of metal cosmetic and toiletry containers, advances in full-body can shaping will continue to broaden the range of applications for aluminum aerosols, thereby giving metal a growth niche. Modest prospects for glass containers will be the result of sluggish demand for prestige fragrances and continued conversions from glass to plastic in a number of skin care and cosmetic product applications. Nonetheless, glass will maintain its niche in applications where glass remains prevalent -- nail enamels and fragrances.

Skin care market to see above average growth
Hair care, skin care and oral care were the three largest markets in 2007, together accounting for over two-thirds of unit demand. The skin care market will present above-average opportunities for containers, largely due to healthy expansion in the over-55 population and a plethora of new product introductions of skin care compounds for men and those targeted at meeting the needs of ethnic consumers and children.
