World Agricultural Biotechnology

Global demand for transgenic (i.e., genetically modified) seeds will advance 12 percent per annum to US$3.8 billion in 2006. Arable land devoted to transgenic crops is expected to increase 7.2 percent per year to 184 million acres over the same period.

The world transgenic seed and crop industry has become increasingly consolidated. Major competitors Aventis CropScience (being sold to Bayer - Germany), Delta and Pine Land, DuPont, Monsanto and Syngenta have all been actively engaged in merger, acquisition and/or spinoff activities in 1998-2001. During this period, consolidation has evolved from a competitive strategy aimed at securing market share to a means of appeasing shareholders in response to an uncertain global marketplace.

These and other key findings are detailed in World Agricultural Biotechnology. Historical data plus forecasts to 2006 and 2011 are given for transgenic seed sales by crop and country, as well as analysis for transgenic seeds' growth prospects by function. The structure of the gloobal agricultural biotechnology industry is examined in detail, and major players competing in the industry are profiled.
