The Web Services-Security (WS-Security) standard was originally developed by IBM, Microsoft, and VeriSign, as a standard to be administered by the OASIS organization. The Web Services-Interoperability (WS-I) Organization oversaw the continued development of the standard's Basic Profile until final publication of v2.0 in November 2010. WS-Security is designed to help protect Web services in an open, device-independent manner. The WS-Security Basic Profile does not define all security needs instead acting as a security foundation to be used with existing and future security models and technologies. WS-Security uses the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)-based secure messaging schemes to support layered protection through the use of various tokens, trust domains, encryption methods, and signature formats. WS-I is now part of OASIS, known as OASIS WS-I after delivery of the final draft of the WS-Security 2.0 Base Profile.
