Romania is located in south-eastern Europe, bordering Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria and Serbia. In 2013, the population is estimated at 21.7mn, making it one of the largest countries in the region. Romania became an EU member state in 2007. Following the most recent parliamentary elections which took place in December 2012, the Social Liberal Union government now consists of the centre-left Alliance of the SDP and the National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR), as well as the centre-right Alliance (ACD) of the National Liberal Party (NLP) and the Conservative Party (CP). Victor Ponta was re-appointed as Prime Minister, despite his power-struggle with President Bãsescu.
