Out of the broad swath of annual household expenditures, this report tracks a targeted selection of consumer spending on energy-related services and commodities for the home (see below). It focuses only on primary owned homes, excluding spending by rental properties, dormitories, second homes, prisons, military bases and owned vacation homes.

Utility companies, home supply retailers, home maintenance service companies, home repair companies, home builders, energy conservation companies, energy-efficiency organizations and regional planners.

Data are from the Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Surveys from 2000 to 2007 (the latest available). This is an annual, nationwide household survey designed to represent the total U.S. civilian noninstitutional population. Surveys are performed over the course of the year in 91 geographic areas consisting of a mixture of metropolitan, micropolitan and rural areas. Each year approximately 14,200 households generate over 40,000 usable interview and diary forms from which these numbers are generated.

Household expenditures in this report are defined below. Data on higher income became available in 2003 and are included. Full data tables can be found in Appendix A.

Two Annual Spending Types:

1) Spending by all households in each demographic group, in billions of dollars.

2) Spending by each household in a demographic group, in dollars.

Age: <25, 25-34, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75+ Income: <5K, 5-9K, 10-14K, 15-19K, 20-29K, 30-39K, 40-49K, 50-69K, 70K+ Higher Income: <70K, 70-79K, 80-99K, 100-119K, 120-149K, 150K+ Region: West, Northeast, Midwest, South Family: Single without kids, Husband & Wife Only, Husband & Wife with oldest child under 6, Husband & Wife with oldest child 6-17, Husband & Wife with oldest child 18+
