Introduction

Despite the variety of efficacious oral antidiabetics available to treat type 2 diabetes-many of them available generically-the unmet need in this disease remains high. In October 2006, the launch of Merck's Januvia (sitagliptin) introduced to the U.S. market the newest class of agents to treat this disease, the dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitors, which enjoy several advantages over their competitors. In this report, we review current and emerging treatment options for type 2 diabetes and examine the market, providing data on the uptake of novel branded agents over the last five years. We focus particularly on Januvia, its current clinical trial data, and its market uptake since launch; on Novartis's Galvus and Takeda's alogliptin, likely to be Januvia's most direct competitor; and on the market outlook for the DPP-IV inhibitor class.

Get the Answers You Need to Shape Your Strategy
  • The high level of unmet needs in type 2 diabetes offers significant opportunity for novel agents even at premium prices and despite generic competition. What are the greatest unmet needs in treatment of type 2 diabetes? Are any emerging therapies likely to fulfill these needs? What benefits do current therapies offer diabetic patients, and what are their drawbacks? Why will metformin continue to be physicians' first choice for first-line therapy?
  • The DPP-IV inhibitors offer several advantages over currently available therapies for type 2 diabetes. In what way are they superior to existing therapies? What unmet needs can these agents fulfill? What drawbacks may hinder physician uptake of the DPP-IV inhibitors? How are physicians likely to use these agents? Will they supplant any of the current leading therapies? Which companies are leading the development of DPP-IV inhibitors? What is the market outlook for the DPP-IV inhibitors?
