  • Multiprotocol Label Switching virtual private network (MPLS VPN) - For the purposes of these forecasts, Ovum takes MPLS-based VPN services to be Layer-3 VPNs which meet the Internet Engineering Task Force MPLS standard (RFC 2547) and closely related proprietary implementations and extensions. Layer-2 MPLS-based VPN technologies (such as Virtual Private LAN Service) are excluded. The forecast is for IP VPN services offered by a service provider and in-house implementations of IP VPNs are excluded.
  • Internet Protocol Security virtual private network (IPsec VPN) - The IPsec VPN category includes all site-to-site VPN services offered by service providers that are based on the public Internet and that use IPsec tunneling as the primary mechanism for traffic segregation (most also use IPsec encryption, but the use or non-use of encryption is immaterial to Ovum's definition). IPsec VPNs that are implemented by a company in-house are excluded. Remote access IPsec VPNs which provide VPN access from a soft client (e.g. on a PC or other device) are also excluded.
  • Connections - Installed base of IP VPN connections to enterprise sites at December 31 of the specified year.
  • Revenues - Annual service provider revenues from retail sales to enterprises for IP VPN services for the specified calendar year (i.e. January 1 to December 31). The revenue forecasts include IP VPN port charges, rental of the access connection from enterprise site to VPN point-of-presence, rental of any customer premises equipment devices that are included as part of the service, and any service management fees (e.g. reporting) that form a standard component of the service. Revenues from network design and integration, project management, value-added services, and off-net calling are excluded.
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises - Enterprises with 20-249 employees in the specified country.
  • Mid-sized enterprises - Enterprises with 250-999 employees in the specified country.
  • Large enterprises - Enterprises with 1,000 or more employees in the specified country.
