In 2008 the Netherlands outperformed the average growth level amongst the EU-14 countries as the effects of the economic slowdown only filtered through to the express market by the beginning of 2009. The credit crunch and subsequent economic downturn started to take its toll on the express markets in the second half of 2008, firstly mainly the intercontinental Premium volumes but soon after the decline had spread to all areas of the European express market. Whilst demand for cross-border home delivery services and economic recovery will eventually support the express industry's recovery, the global economic slowdown and reduced consumer spending power have diminished its potential compared with previous years.
