Introduction

The EU’s Climate and Energy Package was introduced in 2009 to ensure that the region meets its 20-20-20 targets. The EU plans to reduce its GHG emissions by 20% and increase the share of renewable energy consumption to 20%. As per EU’s Effort Sharing Directive launched in 2006, each member country has committed to an indicative 9% reduction in energy usage by 2016 compared to 2005 levels.

Features and benefits
  • Analysis of key facets of the EU 20-20-20 targets and Spain's interpretation of the same.
  • Benchmarking of Spain's performance against that of other major European countries in terms of energy efficiency and target achievement.
  • Analysis of Spain's performance with respect to its set targets for emissions control and energy efficiency.
  • Key business opportunities generated by Spain through policies and measures undertaken to achieve its emissions and efficiency targets.
Highlights

Spain’s financial troubles and underwhelming energy efficiency performance have led to a large gap between its targets and performance. The country is expected to miss its targets given its current pace of development. However, there has been a steady decrease in energy intensity in the country since 2005, even as overall consumption has increased

The transport sector is given special attention when it comes to emissions mitigation through programs like the Strategic Transport Infrastructure Plan and the Spanish Strategy for Sustainable Mobility. The latter is the umbrella scheme under which the country aims to use a wide mix of measures to promote a more efficient transport system.

Promotion of solar PV, solar thermal systems, and energy efficiency systems through the Technical Buildings Code have also led to many opportunities for installers, manufacturers, and suppliers of such equipment. However, the construction slump and slow recovery expected in the sector are expected to mitigate gains in the short term.

Your key questions answered
  • Assess Spain's potential for investment in sectors involving energy efficiency and emissions mitigation.
  • Analyze trends for energy usage, emissions control and legislations in place in Spain in order to meet its EU 20-20-20 targets.
  • Identify sectors with high levels of legislative support and their future outlook.
