Price cuts affected pharmaceutical companies in most of the BRIC countries during the first half of 2011, as governments in these markets attempt to contain drug costs. However, a number of branded companies have looked to offer voluntary discounts in order to avoid consequences such as compulsory licensing agreements and mandatory price cuts.Mutual recognition of clinical trials, surveillance, and regulatory procedures have been addressed by a number of the BRIC markets, to reduce the regulatory burden and facilitate approval of drugs across several markets. However, new regulations in Brazil and Russia to help prioritize generic approval have led to approval delays for branded drugs.While some positive moves have been made to improve IP protection, these seem to be only token gestures compared to the steps that need to be taken. Nevertheless, in order to combat counterfeit medicines, a number of strategies have been implemented in order to shore up supply chains in BRIC markets.
