Bioinformatics is the application of computer science in biology to analyze and interpret data. It includes a wide variety of activities starting from building of scientific databases to bioinformatics tools.

India was one of the first countries in the world to establish a nation wide bioinformatics network. In 1986-87, Department of Biotechnology (DBT)initiated the program on bioinformatics in India.
The general cost structure for a bioinformatics company consists mainly of expenses in manpower, license fee, infrastructure and others.
Bioinformatics application starts from drug discovery and extends up to clinical development stage in case of pharma.
