The consumer service industry is one that provides a variety of services, rather than goods, to the general public. Consumer services provide the population with banking, wholesale, communications, and retail trade services, as well as other professional services like software development, medicine, non-profit activities, and any government service such as defense and justice administration. Some specific examples of consumer services include: landscaping, funeral services, florists, child care, amongst others.
The child care service industry generally provides day care for infants and children. Most often the child care establishments offer care for age groups ranging from infancy to preschool, but they may also offer afterschool or summer programs for older children. The florist industry is comprised of the commerce, production, and trade in flowers. Florist services include creation of floral design or flower arranging, the display of flowers, merchandising, and flower delivery. The funeral service industry includes companies that organize funerals and ready the deceased for interment. Funeral establishments conduct wakes, provide transportation of the deceased, as well as the sale of caskets and other funeral goods. The landscaping industry involves any activities that change visible features of an area of land. Landscaping includes installing gardens, trees, plants, shrubs, and lawns, as well as landscape care and maintenance services.
The consumer services industry is largely dependent upon the personal income of consumers. There is much competition with the consumer services industry as it is formed of many separate sub-industries that are competing with each other. However, due to this, the consumer service industry is fairly stable as services typically will always be needed in one form or another.
