| Countries covered: China Silicon steel can be divided into hot-rolled silicon steel and cold-rolled silicon steel. Hot-rolled silicon steel, due to its low availability and high energy depletion, has phased out; because of cold-rolled silicon steel with high technology and low energy depletion, therefore, is the major product in the future. Cold-rolled silicon steel is divided into non-oriented silicon steel and oriented silicon steel Since 2000, China's silicon steel has been a rapid development, some large steel companies built up silicon steel production line. Non-oriented silicon steel production capacity jumped from less 500,000 tons in 2000 to 4.75 million tons in 2008. The total output of Non-oriented silicon steel achieved 4.478 million tons in 2008, an increase of 6.9% year-on-year. But, the silicon steel is still in short supply in China. China imports large number of non-oriented silicon steel and oriented silicon steel every year. In 2008 the self-sufficiency rate of non-oriented silicon steel and oriented silicon steel was 84.12% and 56.5% respectively. The future growth of demands for Non-oriented silicon steel is mainly from three aspects: 1) substitute for imported products, 2) the new demands of product upgrading, 3) electric power generation equipment growth Before 2008, in China only Wuhan Iron and Steel Company had the capacity to produce oriented silicon steel, the current production capacity is 420,000 tons. In May 2008, Baosteel put its oriented silicon steel production line on stream, thus the Wuhan Iron and Steel Company will face a new rival. It is expected that before 2010 the China oriented silicon steel market will be still dominated by Wuhan Iron and Steel, Baosteel will take small part. After 2010, Valin Group and Anshan Iron and Steel Company will put their oriented silicon steel production lines into operation, the competitive pattern will be changed, competition of China’s oriented silicon steel market will be fierce. Normally, it is expected that oriented silicon steel market will face more difficulties in 2009 and 2010. The fierce competition will suppress the price rising space, therefore, the profitability of China’s oriented silicon steel products will be squeezed. Optimistically, when the global economy starts recovery and China national grid investment starts, oriented silicon steel industry will enter into prosperity period. |
