In 2007 China airports passenger throughput was 387.59 million person times, an increase of 16.8 per cent year-on-year, 8.611 million tons of cargo throughput, an increase of 14.3 per cent year-on-year, the take off and landing sortie were 3,940,800 times, an increase of 13 per cent year-on-year.

The position of China's airport in the international airport's ranking list has proceeded. The passenger throughput of Beijing Capital Airport in 2007 was 53,736,900 person-times, ranked world No. 9, kept the same position as 2006, but the gap between No.8 Frankfurt Airport has narrowed; in cargo throughput section, the throughput of Shanghai Pudong Airport was 2.4948 million tons, ranking No. 5, ascended one position than 2006; and in take off and landing section, Beijing Capital Airport made 400,000 sortie, ranking No. 23, ascended 5 position than 2006.

In order to deal with the shortage of airports’ capacity, most major airports have launched its expansion project. The third-phase of Beijing Capital Airport opened in February 2008, which will reach 76 million person-times of passenger throughput, 1.8 million tons of cargo throughput and 60,000 sortie of take off and landing in 2015. Shanghai Pudong Airport second terminal and third runway opened in March 2008, which will reach 42 million of passenger throughput, 368,000 sorties of take off and landing in 2010. In addition, the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Shenzhen Airport is considered the expansion project as well.
