SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
The $12.4 billion U.S. siding product industry has outpaced construction material shipments over the past decade. Shipment gains are strongest for fiber cement siding products as builders and homeowners seek cost effective, durable, low-maintenance products that can provide a natural look. Brick and stucco exterior wall material markets benefited from the strong growth in Southern and Western new home building markets. Siding manufacturers, however, are expected to rely more heavily on the residential remodeling and repair market over the next five years as new home construction levels off. Competitors are introducing new products, extending product lines, and strengthening distribution in order to take advantage of these trends. Manufacturers must also improve plant-operating efficiency in this highly competitive environment in order to offset rising material costs.
SIDING INDUSTY TRENDS
Catalina Research uncovered these trends in our 247-page in-depth report on the U.S. siding industry. Report sections cover the U.S. market for metal, vinyl, and wood siding; brick, concrete, and stone exterior wall materials; and fiber cement and insulated exterior finishing systems. In the Executive Summary section, Catalina conducts a growth analysis of five market sectors and 15 product lines. A comparative analysis of product price trends is also included. U.S. siding product spending is evaluated for end-use markets. In addition, Catalina Research calculated the market share of 12 leading manufacturers and ranked the leading brands for ten product lines.
SIDING PRODUCT SHIPMENTS AND MARKET TRENDS
Each product section includes detail U.S. shipment trends. For example, the wood siding section covers shipments of solid wood siding, wood shingles and shakes, softwood plywood siding, hardwood siding, particleboard siding, and cellulosic fiberboard siding. The number of U.S. manufactures is provided for each product line. Wood, metal, and brick sections include data on U.S. exports and imports. Product and material input price trends were included as well. In addition, brand shares are provided for new home builders and remodeling contractors for nine product lines. Brand shares are further segmented by region, cost of home, the number of units built or remodeled, and home type. Vinyl and brick company market shares are provided as well.
END-USE MARKET ANALYSIS AND FACTORS DRIVING DEMAND
End-use market sales and factors affecting demand are divided into four sections- new residential construction, manufactured buildings, residential remodeling and repair, and nonresidential markets. The new residential remodeling construction market section segments siding usage in new single-home construction for six categories of exterior wall material. Siding usage in single-family home construction is further segmented by region, home price, and home style. The manufactured building chapter provides an analysis of siding purchases by mobile home and prefabricated building plants. The residential remodeling and repair market sector analyzes homeowner spending on siding improvements. Spending is broken out for alterations, major replacements, and maintenance and repair. The section on nonresidential construction reviews trends in various siding markets by type of building. An analysis of factors affecting demand includes data trends on U.S. housing starts and completions, home resales, building construction spending, manufactured building output, mortgage interest rates, and other economic and demographic trends.
COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT
Catalina Research profiled 30 North American manufacturers of siding products. Catalina compiled data and information from public company filing documents, trade journals, and databases on product lines, new products, manufacturing capabilities and distribution, acquisitions and capital investments, sales trends, and market shares. The goal is to uncover manufacturer strategies that are being implemented to make inroads in this highly competitive market. Data was also extracted to calculate leading company market shares.
SIDING CONTRACTOR MARKET TRENDS
Data trends are compiled for siding contractors, masonry and stone contractors, and stucco contractors. Data includes revenues, number of contractors, material costs, number of employees and wage rates, and payroll’s share of revenues. Contractor markets were also analyzed by region and state.
