SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
The $17.0 billion U.S. roofing product market has been a growing sector of the U.S. construction materials industry over the past fifteen years. Roofing product sales growth benefited from growing nonresidential demand and the replacement or repair of roofs of an aging housing stock. Dollar sales growth also received a boost from the industry’s ability to pass through rising material costs due to the relatively concentrated nature of this market. In addition, roofing industry sales growth and profit margins were aided by the shift to higher-value products such as laminated or multilayered shingles, built-up roofs, and single-ply plastic and rubber membranes. Currently, dollar shipment gains are estimate to strengthen as U.S economic growth accelerates, employment levels rise, and building construction activity moves upward for the first time since 2006. These positive trends are forecast to keep roofing products a growing sector of the U.S. construction material industry over the next five years.

ROOFING PRODUCT INDUSTRY TRENDS

ROOFING PRODUCT SHIPMENTS AND MARKET TRENDS

For example, the asphalt roofing product section covers shipments of roofing asphalts, coatings, and cements; asphalt shingles; roll roofing and cap sheets; modified bitumen membranes; and roofing felt and other asphalt roofing products. The number of U.S. manufacturers is provided for each product line. Product and material input price trends are included as well. Each product section also provides export and import shipments by major country of destination and origin.

ROOFING CONTRACTOR AND DISTRIBUTION BUSINESSES
Report sections are provided for the residential replacement and repair, new residential, and nonresidential markets. U.S. Department of Commerce roofing contractor survey data was compiled, calculated, analyzed, estimated and forecasted. Data trends include total revenues, number of contractors, material purchases, the labor situation, and regional and state markets. In addition, Catalina analyzed the installation of photovoltaic solar electric generation systems in the United States in order to uncover the sales opportunities in cool roofing installations and roofing materials incorporating solar cells. Sales trends of wholesalers and retailers are analyzed as well.

ROOFING PRODUCT END-USE MARKETS AND FACTORS DRIVING DEMAND
Reroofing and repair spending is analyzed for all residential property owners. Homeowner spending is further segmented for contractor projects and D-I-Y and B-I-Y purchases. In addition, homeowner roofing and gutter spending is evaluated by demographic characteristic. An analysis of factors effecting demand included data trends on spending on new residential and nonresidential building construction, total housing demand, housing starts and permits, housing demand by region and state, mortgage interest rates, and other housing characteristics and demographic trends.

COMPETITVE ENVIRONMENT
Catalina compiled data and information from public company filing documents, trade journals, and databases, including data and information on new products, manufacturing and distribution, acquisitions and capital investments, and sales trends. Sales data was used to compute market shares for the top five manufacturers. The goal is to uncover manufacturer strategies that are being implemented to make inroads in this dynamic market, including development of products to improve building energy efficiency. In addition, Catalina analyzed the cost structure and profitability of plants specializing asphalt roofing product and coatings materials.
