Additional Information
SCOPE AND METHODOLOGY
Catalina compiled U.S. porch and deck railing shipments from U.S. Department of Commerce surveys. Shipments are for all domestic manufacturers, whether plants are owned by U.S.- or foreign-based companies and whether or not plants specialize (50% or more of total facility revenues) in porch and deck railings. The Commerce shipment data was segmented for metal and wood railings. However, Commerce has no separate product category for vinyl railings. Catalina estimated vinyl’s share of total railing shipments based on the inroads made by vinyl products in the window, fencing, and decking markets. Catalina has analyzed these markets in separate Catalina Reports.
Catalina also compiled porch and deck railing price movements and plant input prices from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Price trends were compiled for metal, wood, and plastic products, as well as for aluminum extrusions, lumber, and plastic resins.
Commerce railing plant surveys were also used to compile data on the number of manufacturers and plant profit margins by material . In addition, Commerce surveys on housing construction trends, new home characteristics, and homeowner remodeling, replacement, and repair spending were used to analyze the factors driving porch and deck railing sales. These factors were correlated with historical shipment trends to forecast sales trends over the next five years.
Catalina provides an executive summary to point to the pertinent market trends uncovered in this Market Profile. Executives are urged to use this data and information to uncover growing sales opportunities and compare your own company’s performance to the market averages.
