SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
The $10.8 billion engineered wood product and reconstituted wood panel market could begin to rebound in 2012 after experiencing a double-dip in 2011. Sales are estimated to increase due the stabilization in the U.S. housing market and the beginning of a recovery in household and commercial furniture production. The housing market seems to be stabilizing due to the double-digit increases in residential permits and existing home sales in recent months. These trends should give a boost to the builder market in the first half of 2012 and the residential remodeling market in the second half as homeowners undertake remodeling projects. Rising sales could strengthen prices, however, the industry remains highly competitive. This coupled with continued cost pressures could keep industry profit margins sluggish.
ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCT & RECONSTITUTED WOOD PANEL SHIPMENT TRENDS
Catalina Research has uncovered these trends in our 105-page in-depth report on the U.S. engineered wood product and reconstituted wood panel industry. Report sections cover the U.S. market for trusses, laminated veneer lumber, I-joists, other engineered wood members, particleboard, oriented strand board, medium density fiberboard, and hardboard. Shipments are also provided by application, such as roof and floor trusses, industrial panel boards, flooring and underlayment, and sheathing.
END-USE MARKETS AND RETAIL DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS
Purchases are provided for construction and industrial markets. Construction markets cover new residential construction, residential remodeling, manufactured housing, and nonresidential construction markets. The analysis includes data on purchases by manufacturers of kitchen cabinets, household furniture, office and other commercial furniture and fixtures, millwork, and signs. Retail sales are provided for structural and other panels, trusses and other building components, and engineered lumber products. In addition, retail sales are segmented by channel such as lumber yards and home center.
FACTORS AFFECTING DEMAND
Catalina analyzes the new and remodeled residential and nonresidential construction markets. Sales trends are correlated with U.S housing demand, housing permits and starts, and nonresidential construction spending. These factors are also tracked by region and state. In addition, production trends of the key industrial markets are analyzed to track industrial demand. This provides insights into the direction of domestic demand in 2012 and beyond.
PROFIT MARGINS AND THE COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT
Catalina Research examined the cost structure and profitability of U.S. engineered wood product and reconstituted wood panel plants. Data trends are compiled for material, labor, and capital inputs. As part of this analysis, Catalina Research investigated industry capacity and industry concentration. Sales and production data were compiled for eight leading manufactures to calculate company market shares.
INTERNATIONAL TRADE ACTIVITY
The report also reviews the inroads made by foreign-made engineered wood products and reconstituted wood panels. Import data is provided for major country of origin. Similar data is available for exports and their growing share of U.S. shipment. Global sales are also analyzed by major country of destination.
