The market is very consolidated with four companies (SABMiller/Heineken/Castel/Diageo) accounting for 90% of the African market. Historically the vast majority of markets have been effective monopolies. However, these monopolies are increasingly being challenged, as evidenced by the emergence of new competitors in Ivory Coast; Kenya; Madagascar; Rwanda; South Africa; and Tanzania.
In many African markets beer operates in an alcohol market dominated by local unregulated “homebrews”. As well as the unregulated alcohol market beer also competes with commercial sorghum beers and non-alcoholic malt beverages.
