United States : Consumer Electronics Report Q3 2014

BMI View: The US consumer electronics market is a mature one, with high penetration rates in most devicecategories, but opportunities definitely remain. Growth areas include large-size HDand UHD TV sets,smartphones, Microsoft Windows 8 tablets and convertibles/hybrids, Ultrabooks, and smart TV sets.

Questions still remain about the sustainability of consumption in the absence of strong wage growth and thefact that most sales will be upgrades rather than new consumers.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer Hardware Sales: USD125.4bn in 2013 to USD130.4bn in 2014, +4.0% in US dollar terms.

Forecasts reflect that shipments of desktops and notebooks remain low as consumers shift spending tolower-cost but still high spec tablets.

AV Sales: USD74.6bn in 2013 to USD79.9bn in 2014, +7% in US dollar terms. There is evidence that USconsumers are willing to pay more for features such as 4k and large-screens; however, sales of mid-rangeflat-screens remain under pressure amid economic uncertainty.
