Tanzania Telecommunications Report - Q4 2014

BMI View: Despite a mobile penetration rate of just 55.2%, growth in Tanzania's mobile market hasslowed down considerably, due to the discounting of inactive SIMs throughout 2013 and weak networkcoverage and take-up of services in rural areas, where around 70% of the population lives. However, themarket has shown signs of improvement in the final quarter of 2013 and beginning of 2014 and BMIforecasts positive subscriptions growth throughout the five years to 2018. We believe governmentinvestment in network expansion through the Universal Access Fund as well as operators' sale of theirmobile towers to dedicated infrastructure firms will encourage ongoing expansion of networks tounderserved areas. Meanwhile, by offloading tower assets, mobile operators will be able to concentrate onadding value through improved non-voice service offerings, while expanding their 3G footprints morequickly and cost effectively.

The mobile sector grew 2.0% in Q114, compared to growth of 2.2% in the previous quarter and 0.8% inQ113.

Mobile ARPU declined for the third consecutive quarter in Q214, following a steady rise in ARPUbetween 2010 and 2013.
