BMI View: South Africa currently has a very strong tourism sector. The country boasts a variety of tourist attractions including great beaches, adventure activities and nature reserves. With efficient, modern airports in many of the major cities, the country receives a high number of international inbound tourists.
We forecast continued growth in the coming years, both in inbound and outbound tourism.
Currently, the largest market for inbound tourism for South Africa remains other African countries. With good road and air links to neighbouring countries along with less stringent travel regulations, we forecast that arrivals from Africa will continue to increase at a faster pace than those from other geographical regions. However, there has been a significant uplift in the amount of visitors from other regions, such as Europe, especially since the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The country has invested heavily in its airports over recent years and intercontinental travel, both inbound and outbound looks set to increase, as long distance travel becomes a more viable option for people after the global financial crisis.
