Slovenia Insurance Report Q3 2015

BMI View: The growth of Slovenia's insurance sector, which is mature by some metrics, has beenhampered by the general weakness of the economy. Looking forward, the life segment should benefit fromthe ageing of the population, innovation by the leading multi-national insurers and, perhaps, promotion ofindex-linked products. Nevertheless, life insurance is in competition from supplementary pensions and otherconduits for organised savings: we expect that the segment will remain underdeveloped at the end of theforecast period. In the non-life segment, the main drivers of growth will come from the motor vehicleinsurance sub sector: some companies will be able to increase prices as they improve services to customers.

Most will benefit from an upgrading of the national car fleet. Initiatives of the government and the insurersto control medical costs should hamper the growth in premiums in the important health segment.

In the context of Central and Eastern Europe, Slovenia ranks as a small, but steadily growing insurancemarket (although currency movements mean that premiums have been shrinking in USD terms). As is thecase in a number of other countries in the region, the former state monopoly and a number of indigenouscompanies have, over time, been losing market share to the local subsidiaries of global/regional multinationals.

Most of the players clearly have access to the capital that they need. Most operate as composites(and/or with a specialised health insurance subsidiary). Underwriting is disciplined.
