Oman Telecommunications Report Q2 2015

BMI View: Despite the maturity of the market and its relatively small size, positive growth continues to beregistered across all sectors of Oman's telecommunications market. The high mobile penetration rateproves no barrier to expansion of both the wireline voice and broadband markets (although we believeapparent growth dynamics in mobile are skewed by the retention of large numbers of inactivesubscriptions). Omantel's investment in VDSL upgrades and fibre serve to boost demand for advancedservices, including pay-TV, and this bodes well for the emergence of a new player, Oman BroadbandCompany (OBC), over the next few years. The opportunities for growth are reflected in our revisedforecasts for the mobile and wireline sectors, which have now been extended through to 2019.

Key Data

MVNO-driven mobile subscription growth exceeded expectations in 2014. There were 6.194mnsubscriptions at the end of 2014, a figure that will rise to 6.775mn by 2018.

Wireline voice connections also grew strongly in 2014 and our forecasts have been raised in anticipationof there being 407,000 accesses by the end of 2019.

Broadband connections will number 2.728mn by the end of 2019, in light of very strong take-up ofmobile-based accesses in 2014.
