Germany Power Report Q3 2015

BMI View: Renewable electricity generation will take a bigger share of the German energy mix over ourforecast period as Germany pursues its ambitious Energiewende - a policy that will result in majorstructural changes to the traditional electricity utility business model. Strong popular support for the energytransition will ensure that Germany retains its status as Europe's renewable energy bellwether, despite thehuge costs involved and the resultant macroeconomic implications.

The reform of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) is slowing the pace of renewables expansion so asto reduce the costs associated with the Energiewende (energy transition), but there has been no change inGermany's green energy policy trajectory. Germany will continue to register rapid growth in renewablebasedelectricity generation and retain its position as a global renewables powerhouse. This will, however, have significant implications for the economy and structural problems in the utilities sector are unlikely torecede.
