China Consumer Electronics Report - Q4 2014

BMI View: Consumer electronics spending in China is forecast to continue strong growth as vendors makeinroads in key categories such as smartphones and PCs to achieve strong volume growth. An additionalboost is the package of economic and social reforms announced by the government in late 2013, whichshould boost consumption, which had been effected to some extent by the cessation of government subsidiesin 2013. We expect the market value will grow by 8.5% in 2014 and we expect growth momentum will bemaintained over the medium term with a CAGR of 7.1% 2014-2018. As incomes rise in China, consumerswill spend an increasing proportion on consumer electronics devices, a trend which will be amplified bydeclining prices for tablets, TVs and smartphones.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Computer hardware sales: USD73.8bn in 2013 to USD80.3bn in 2014, +8.9% in US dollar terms.Tablets continue to be the outperforming device category, but after Microsoft cut OS licensing fees forlow-cost notebooks in H114 there could be a shift in the competitive dynamic.
