Argentina Information Technology Report - Q4 2014

BMI View: Economic troubles have dominated the discussion of Argentina in 2014, with the devaluation ofthe peso, import restrictions, skyrocketing inflation, capital controls, shortage of credit and governmentdebt default have seen the country enter a recession. The IT market will likely be hit by lower consumerconfidence, higher import costs of components and problems of inflation affecting employee wages.

However, potential investors do not seem to have been put off, as devaluation will help make IT exportsabroad more competitive. The July 2014 IPO of Argentine tech company Globant demonstrates this andmany investors still see the strong sector potential in Argentina. The scope for large increases in PCpenetration, second device ownership, enterprise software penetration and cloud computing are examplesof sectors that have growth opportunities.

Government efforts to boost software development with tax incentives for local companies aim to open theexport market. Software development companies Epidata and Quadion have stated that the large ArgentineIT market maintains its lustre despite the economic challenges. Providing these short-term economicchallenges can be navigated, we believe the market will grow rapidly, with rising PC penetration, includingnew form factors such as tablets and hybrids, and increased enterprise spending as confidence improves.

The market will also benefit from deferred purchases/investment.
