| Countries covered: Slovenia Logistics and transportation industry has traditionally been one of the strongest industries in Slovenia. Strong growth in 2006 and 2007 will reverse in 2009 as the international trade will subside but the long term prospects for the industry remain positive and the industry is expected to contribute more than 7% to the GDP. However, the industry’s segments are very diverse - while road transportation is a hub of activity with almost perfect competition and a strong political clout, rail transportation is hopelessly inefficient. Both passenger and freight cargo are losing money to the former monopolist Slovenske Zeleznice. Maritime transportation is again a different story - although with almost no shoreline one strong port and a strong shipping company have developed, both mainly export oriented. Air transportation is of only national importance and very dependent on a national carrier and the dominant airport operator, both are doing fine. The report examines different threats and opportunities facing these segments and their top companies. |
