| Countries covered: Slovenia Slovenian banking industry has been hit severely by the economic crisis. The industry of financial intermediation contracted for the first time in 17 years and the banking industry recorded an overall loss in 2010. Contraction and loss-making continued in 2011, leading to several credit rating downgrades. However, as recently as three years ago, banking system recorded record profits and growth rates. Slovenian economy as well as the industry reaped the benefits of adopting the EURO in 2007. The banks were not exposed to financial crisis of 2008, leading to claims that this crisis will bypass Slovenia. Why did the things go so wrong? And when will they return to normal? This analysis will show that the main reasons for the crisis in the banking industry are connected to the boom years that followed the EURO adoption. They have masked underlying structural problems that were exposed by the crisis. The report will also show that the banking industry will recover in due time unless there will be additional external shocks. Underlying weaknesses of the system, now exposed, could be tackled and the industry could return to the steady development it enjoyed in the past. |
