Exotic and Developmental Energy Storage: Technology and Markets

The last ten years have been a renaissance in energy storage technology, as once-developmental energy storage systems like lithium batteries and fuel cells achieved commercial success. This report examines today's exotic and developmental energy storage systems - which will be tomorrow's success stories. Technologies considered include flywheels, ultracapacitors and supercapacitors, and thermal energy storage, as well as systems based on superconducting materials and nanotechnology. The existing target market for utility-scale, stationary, environmental control, automotive, portable, and military/aerospace is defined and analyzed. A detailed description of the technologies, companies, and short and long-term market potential is provided. Five- and ten-year market predictions for exotic and developmental systems are presented, along with a detailed set of company profiles.

Additional Information

STUDY GOAL AND OBJECTIVES

In the mid-seventies, the "Oil Crisis" sparked calls for a complete re-assessment of the way the nation generated, distributed, stored, and used energy. Many developmental energy technologies were proposed. Over the past thirty years, some of these technologies have been widely accepted (advanced batteries, fuel cells, cogeneration, photovoltaics, etc.). Others have been largely unable to move from the lab or establish enough demand to justify prices (synthetic oil, tidal power, etc.). In other cases, niche markets have been established (wind power, enhanced oil recovery, thermal solar, and compressed air or pumped hydroelectric energy storage).

With this in mind, the energy stream can be characterized as follows:

  • Conventional - Widely used technology, for instance fossil fuels, nuclear power plants, the electric utility grid, the internal combustion engine, etc.
  • Alternative - Recently commercialized technology (widely introduced during the last 25 years). Includes solar (photovoltaic and thermal), wind power, pumped hydro, compressed gas, commercial advanced batteries, fuel cells, cogeneration, etc.
  • Emerging/Developmental - Newly developed, not widely commercialized, or commercialized in limited market niches.

This Business Opportunity Report is concerned with the third group, which BCC calls "emerging and developmental" energy storage. These systems are a mixed bag of contenders for a relatively small share of the multi billion dollar energy storage market. As such, they must compete with the established conventional, as well as alternative technologies.

These technologies include flywheel energy storage (FES), which can potentially be used to store energy in large and small stationary products, as well as vehicles. FES is currently commercialized for uninterruptible power supply systems and power quality conditioners.

Another approach includes capacitive/electronic energy storage (ultracapacitors, supercapacitors, and aerocapacitors). These products evolved from well-established capacitor technology and can also potentially be used in large and small stationary products, portable products, and vehicles. Capacitive energy storage is currently commercialized for portable and stationary products.

Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) takes advantage of a new generation of high temperature superconducting materials. SMES can potentially be used in large and small stationary products. SMESs are currently commercialized for power quality conditioners.

There are areas where these energy storage systems could experience the explosive growth usually associated with emerging industries. In other cases, there could be problems scaling up to commercial applications, or challenges establishing consumer demand.

    REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY

As technical issues associated with emerging and developmental energy storage systems are resolved, new issues regarding manufacturability and cost are emerging. A system that looks good in the lab must still prove itself in the marketplace. In many cases, this will entail establishing a demand for the product. On the other hand, in some cases the challenge will be to displace a well-entrenched legacy infrastructure. In still other cases, emerging and developmental energy storage systems will have to move from the government-sponsored project stage to the "government as the customer" stage.

This report will help characterize the technology, target markets, and competing systems and should aid in making informed decisions on which emerging and developmental systems can compete in various markets. This Business Opportunity Report is intended to be the most complete technical, economic and business document of this type on this subject and is designed to provide information of a professional nature. The technical data are dependent on the accuracy of the manufacturers and technical sources that helped make up the BCC database. This report is not intended to constitute a legal or accounting document, nor is it an endorsement of any given product or process. The authors, and BCC Inc., as the publisher, assume no liability for loss or damage as a result of reliance on this material.

CONTRIBUTION OF THE STUDY AND FOR WHOM

This report is intended to provide a unique analysis of the U.S. market for emerging and developmental energy storage technology, and will be of interest to manufacturers of these advanced systems. This report will also be valuable to those involved in other aspects of conventional and alternative energy storage development and marketing, as well as those offering competing Ttechnologies. Existing or potential energy storage system users, including the automobile, utility, consumer appliance, computer and environmental control industries, as well as the military, can characterize existing or potential energy storage markets. These end-users will learn what control technology designs energy storage systems will, and will not, allow. BCC wishes to thank those companies, government agencies and university researchers who contributed information for this report.

    SCOPE AND FORMAT

First, conventional energy storage technology is compared to emerging and developmental options. This report organizes emerging and developmental energy storage technology as follows:

  • Flywheel Energy Storage
  • Electronic and Capacitive Energy Storage
  • Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage

Then, the market is organized into five sub-sectors based on the type of consumer:

  • Uniterruptible Power Supplies
  • Ultility Load Leveling and Power Quality
  • Automotive and Motive Power
  • Portable Product and Microelectronics
  • Military and Aerospace

Each of these divisions is comprised of different market sub-sectors, and each is examined in terms of past, present and future sales. By definition, the technologies considered within the scope of this report are emerging and developmental. In some cases, commercialization will depend on the new technologies' ability to displace existing, established technologies. In other cases, new markets will develop to take advantage of the emerging technology. In many cases, commercialization will begin to accelerate within the next five years, and will continue to accelerate between 2005 and 2010. In other cases, market growth will peak within the next five years and begin to drop off between 2005 and 2010.

With this in mind, estimated markets for 2000 and predicted 2001, 2005, and 2010 market figures are provided. Predicted markets and average annual growth rates (AAGR) are expressed in constant year 2000 dollars. A detailed discussion of the companies involved in the battery industry is provided in this report's Industry Profiles section.

    METHODOLOGY

This report is based on a literature review, patent examination, and discussions with commercial and government sources. Throughout the report, past market data is expressed in current dollars, and estimates and predictions in constant year 2000 dollars. Estimated wholesale markets for year 2000 and predicted 2001, 2005, and 2010 market figures are provided. Most market summaries are based on a consensus scenario that assumes no unanticipated technical advances and no unexpected legislation. In some cases, several possible development scenarios are presented. Totals are rounded to the nearest million dollars. When appropriate, information from previously published sources is identified to allow a more detailed examination by clients.
