In an effort to increase portfolio profitability, many issuers are looking for channels to leverage in order to increase card usage. One potential area our subscribers wanted to explore was cardholders using their personal cards to make business-related purchases. Encouraging consumers to make these types of purchases is a win-win for lenders; not only are spend volumes (and associated interchange revenues) higher, but the risk of these purchases going unpaid is low, since cardholders are typically reimbursed for them by their employer. In this study, we will examine the incidence of these types of purchases currently being made on consumers’ cards, the types of expenses consumers are most likely to make with their personal cards, and the method of reimbursement for these expenses.
