Professional Football in England & Europe 2004

 
Professional football is the most popular spectator sport in Europe. In the UK alone in 2001 approximately 25 million spectators paid to attend professional football matches. This is more than the combined amount that watched Rugby (both codes), cricket, horse racing and basketball. Football in the 21st century has become big business.

This ODS report looks at the market for professional Association Football in the UK and also includes a section on the main European leagues. It concentrates on the market defined by teams playing in the English and Scottish Football Associations sanctioned Premier Leagues and the English 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions.

The UEFA organisation claimed the 2002-03 Champions League final had a cumulative live TV audience of 790 million, compared with the claim of 723 m viewers in the previous year. The report covers aspects and reasons behind this popularity.
