Operators in both mature and emerging markets are finding it a challenge to drive profitable revenue growth in increasingly competitive markets.

Revenue growth improved slightly in the worldwide telecoms market in 2010, and growth returned to capital investment following the downturn of previous years. Nevertheless, market conditions were still difficult for many operators, and pressures on profitability were still evident in all regions.

As in previous years, mobile services were the engine of revenue growth and the growing penetration of advanced mobile services was especially evident in emerging markets. However, service bundling is having a negative effect on the prices of individual wireline services. The need for integrated operations is becoming more pressing for operators everywhere – particularly as the rate of growth in subscriber numbers continues to slow in emerging markets. Continuing consolidation among telecoms operators – particularly in growth markets – reflects the efforts of market players to drive increased scale and profitability.

This Report provides worldwide financial and operational data for more than 130 operators, split into four geographical regions. It also includes insight into the key drivers in the mobile and fixed markets in each region, as well as commentary on changes in the competitive landscape. Lastly, it provides recommendations for operators in both mature and emerging markets.

This Report answers your key questions:
  • which regions recorded the highest levels of revenue growth in 2010?
  • which operators are the most profitable?
  • how have operators' market shares changed from 2009 to 2010?
  • which services are driving revenue growth in each of the regions?
  • how much growth in mobile subscriber numbers was there in 2010?
  • how do growth patterns differ between regions?
