Site sharing can reduce access network costs by between 25% and 50%. Access network costs typically represent between one sixth and one third of an operator’s total costs. Infrastructure sharing offers a real opportunity to reduce these costs substantially. As mobile data traffic, pressure on operator profit and the need to roll out new technologies increase, operators must consider sharing their infrastructure.

The conditions for mobile infrastructure sharing are arguably more favourable than they were ten years ago. Regulators are actively encouraging sharing and operators are becoming more successful at negotiating infrastructure-sharing deals. This is creating a renewed interest in network sharing.

In this report, we consider the impact of sharing upon the LTE business model both in developed and emerging countries. We estimate savings in both capex and opex, and analyse the market drivers for sharing, such as cost reduction, and regulatory and vendor support. We also review a series of case studies and lessons learned from network-sharing implementations.

The report includes operator case studies for Bell Mobility, France Telecom (Orange), Hutchison Whampoa (3), T-Mobile, Tele2, Telenor, TELUS, Vodafone and more. It also discusses key infrastructure-sharing equipment suppliers, such as Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks. We examine the Brazilian, Chinese and Indian regulators’ approaches to sharing. We also discuss the new and evolving role of the ‘towerco’ as a provider of low-cost, low-risk sharing.

Transform the economics of your wireless business with infrastructure sharing answers your key questions:
  • How big are the potential cost savings in both opex and capex?
  • What are the drivers behind sharing?
  • What are the potential pitfalls when considering network sharing?
  • What are the sharing models?
  • What are other operators doing in this area?
  • What vendor support can operators expect?
  • What is the regulator's view on network sharing?
  • Is there a difference between sharing in emerging and developed markets?
