| Wal-Mart is the largest retailing company in the world by revenue. Globally, it competes directly with both the two other largest global retailers, Carrefour and Tesco, in relatively few markets, which is why the China market is a special case.
Wal-Mart entered the Chinese market later than Carrefour, which gained a significant lead against Wal-Mart by circumventing certain rules of entry at the time. Wal-Mart has been very keen to draw back the first-mover advantage, and has now overtaken Carrefour in terms of store numbers, although not revenues, largely thanks to buying local chains, especially Trust-Mart. However, Wal-Mart continues to expand its store chain rapidly, and its revenues will likely surpass Carrefour during 2010. |
