Access Asia has published this updated report on the airport industry in China as part of the China Contact Market Research report series. The report covers the market and current state of development of the airports and related services sector in China.

China is rapidly building new airports and upgrading those deemed to be outdated. As part of this upgrading process air traffic control facilities are being upgraded from procedure control to radar-based air traffic control systems to help improve safety and on-time performance.

Since 1990, China has built 25 airports in cities including Shenzhen, Wuhan, Fuzhou and Guilin. An additional 48 have been upgraded, including those in Kunming, Urumqi, Lhasa and Dalian.

The Chinese government's Ninth Five-Year Plan listed 41 airport development projects. With the 2000 emphasis on development the western regions of China this list has been increased.

  • The Ninth Five-Year Plan (1996-2000) set out targets to achieve a doubling of both air cargo and passenger transport from the 1994 totals. This would mean a target of 12 billion tonnes of cargo and 80 million passengers moving within China annually (excluding Hong Kong and Macao).
  • Between 1994 and 2000 the number of passengers on Chinese airlines has grown to in excess of 60 million. This is in line with projected growth by the government.
  • In 2000, China had 142 civil operational airports, the majority of which are capable of handling Boeing 737's and larger aircraft.
  • Chinese authorities plan to have 160 civilian airports by the end of 2002.
  • Beijing Capital Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun Airport combined comprise 37% of the total passengers passing through china and 53% of the total cargo.
