The Oman Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has tried to make the market competitive providing telecom license to ‘Nawras’, in 2005. Prior to that OmanTel was the sole telecom operator in Oman. A third telecom operator is expected to launch its services Oman in 2013. Further TRA permitted the Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) to provide mobile services in Oman in 2009
Mobile segment which grew at a CAGR of 18% from 2007 to 2011, is expected to see a very slow growth in coming years (CAGR of 4% from 2011 to 2015e) as the industry is reaching near its saturation. The growth in the telecom sector is expected to come from internet services where the penetration rate is around 54% only. Companies are focusing on 4G LTE mobile broadband to gain the market share.
