Additional Information

The UK space and water heating market has an estimated total value of £722 million at manufacturers selling prices (MSP) in 2012. This market sector is part of a total UK heating market worth around £1.67 billion.

The core product sectors of the UK space and water heating market include domestic space heating (37%), non-domestic space heating (34%) and domestic and non-domestic water heating (29%). The UK space and water heating market has been volatile over the last 5 years. In common with other products in the building industry, the market has been impacted overall by the global financial crisis and resulting decline in the new construction industry and the RMI sector. Other influences on this market include the growing concerns about energy efficiency and the environment. The government has introduced a significant amount of environmental legislation in recent years placing a greater emphasis on carbon emissions and fuel efficiency.

In recent years, the UK space and water heating market has benefited from increasing health, safety and energy efficiency legislation, revised Building Regulations and environmental legislation. This has stimulated product innovation and development. Factors which have limited opportunities for growth in both the domestic and non-domestic sectors include higher levels of insulation, driven by revisions to Part L of the Building Regulations, which have tended to reduce the overall heating load. With high fuel prices and growing concerns about energy efficiency and the environment, space and water heating products are increasingly designed to deliver improved thermal performance, with a view to achieving lower running costs.

The market penetration of renewables is showing steady growth in both the domestic and non-domestic sectors. This trend has been supported by the non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, introduced in 2011. This scheme introduced long-term tariff support for non-domestic heat generation. The domestic RHI scheme is due to be introduced in summer 2013.

In 2013, key suppliers in the domestic space heating sector include the GDC Group (including Dimplex, Creda Nobo and Valor), the Stovax Group (including Stovax and Gazco), BFM Europe, Be Modern, Focal Point Fires and AJ Wells.

The majority of water heating products are distributed via the trade channels such as builders/plumbers merchants, electrical wholesalers and specialist heating distributors. Around 72% of domestic space heating products are distributed via the retail sector such as DIY multiples, grocery multiples and catalogue stores. Non-domestic space heating products are commonly distributed direct to the contractor or end-user but are also sold via the trade distributors.

The outlook for the UK space and water heating market in 2013 remains uncertain. Lack of robust recovery in the economy continues to have detrimental effect on both business and consumer confidence with both consumer spending and business investment levels continuing to be subdued. Into the medium term, moderate annual growth rates of 2-3% are currently forecast to 2017 when market size is expected to reach around £802 million at MSP. This would represent an increase of 10% when compared to the market size in 2013.
