The Panel Builders market is complex and fragmented in terms of end-use applications. Trends in the market are influenced by many issues, ranging from the level of electricity consumption and manufacturing output to general construction activity levels. These issues are assessed alongside their implications for the UK panel builders and component markets.

The UK panel builders’ market was relatively stable prior to the recession with growth levels averaging around 1-2% per annum. The market declined as a result of the deteriorating economy but returned to growth in 2011. The market is expected to continue to grow through to 2016, when forecasts are for a market value of £572 million. Key factors underpinning growth include health and safety, environmental and energy efficiency legislation, also rising long term electricity consumption and more positive conditions in the oil and gas sector.

The report is not simply a long list of government and fiscal data, but an intelligent and researched analysis of the panel builders sector in the UK.

Additional Information

The panel builders’ market declined between 2008 and 2010, reflecting the poor performance of a number of product groups during the recession. However, some sectors were sustained by exports and continued output in the public sector. The UK panel builders market is estimated to be worth £526 million at manufacturers selling prices (MSP) in 2012. Market growth since 2010 has been slow, reflecting the variable performance of different product groups and the wide range of end use markets – including industrial, construction, oil and gas, marine, power generation, and water.

Current forecasts indicate that the UK panel builders market is likely to continue to experience low growth through to 2016, reaching a value of around £572 million. Key factors underpinning this growth include health and safety, environmental and energy efficiency legislation, also rising long term electricity consumption and more positive conditions in the oil and gas sector.

Factors supporting the market include growth in specialist markets, such as hazardous environments as a result of tightening regulations, evolvement of environmental legislation and investment in development of key end user markets such as oil, gas and renewable energy.

Factors negatively affecting market growth include continued low levels of construction, public sector spending cuts, rationalisation of manufacturing capacity and increasing competition for projects driving down prices.

Capital spending cuts in the public sector, though partially offset by a more buoyant infrastructure sector and gradual recovery in private commercial markets, will continue to limit market growth in the short term.

While growth in electricity consumption tends to follow levels of economic growth, in times of negative growth electricity consumption is likely to fall, with adverse short to medium term implications for panel builders. In the long term, however, growth in this area will benefit the market.

Key end use markets include industrial and manufacturing, water and sewage, power generation, oil, gas and marine, construction and transport.

Niche growth sectors are represented by homeland security, including protection and detection systems, railway electrification and the expansion of co-location centres, driven by factors including trends to credit card transactions. The Non-domestic renewable sector should provide some long term opportunities, including switchgear and power distribution panels.

Power distribution panels represent the largest product sector followed by motor and process controls and building control systems Safety, security and other panels make up the remaining market.

Product development is primarily concerned with environmental factors and health and safety, motivating demand for more sophisticated products which can withstand hazardous environments.
