The household textiles market is worth well over £1 billion at manufacturers prices in 2011 having experienced 5% growth from the market low in 2009. It is a well-established and mature market consisting of a wide range of products, most of which have high levels of household penetration. Conditions over the past 2 years have improved slightly, especially for filled products, but this improvement has been partially driven by increasing raw material costs. Additional Information

The value of the UK household textiles market increased by 2% in 2010, marking a return to growth after 2 years of decline. Sales were, however, constrained by slow economic recovery, problems in the Eurozone and government cuts. The market is currently worth an estimated £1.3bn in 2012, representing growth of around 6% from 2010. A degree of pent-up demand and highly competitive prices from retailers - as well as higher spend in the contract sector - have helped to buoy sales, as has relatively stronger performance in the filled products sector.

Imports of household textiles account for over half of the domestic market and have continued to rise, from £837m in 2009 to £950m in 2011, increasing levels of competition and placing UK manufacturing under pressure. The rise in value of imports, however, also reflects issues such as variable exchange rates and rising cotton prices, both of which impact on cost, as well as higher manufacturing costs in China and Pakistan (both major source countries). The balance of trade was £823m in 2011.

Sales of bed linen are currently estimated to be worth around £548m and are dominated by duvet covers. The filled products sector, which includes duvets, pillows, mattress protectors/enhancers and cushions, seat pads and covers is currently estimated at around £460m million, after relatively strong growth of 4% and 5% in 2010 and 2011 respectively. The market for bathroom textiles showed only marginal growth in 2011 (1%), and is currently worth around £263m, whilst bathroom textiles is currently estimated at around £60m.

There have been a number of high profile closures, including Habitat, Silentnight, Allders of Croydon and Bed-e-Buys. Companies that have managed to survive the past few years have – at least to some extent – benefited by picking up business from those that have closed.

Distribution is characterised by diversity and fragmentation, with the level of fragmentation continuing to rise as a result of the growing number of internet-only retailers and the trend to shop online or via a smartphone.

Growth in the UK market for household textiles, which has been buoyed over the past two years by heavy discounting and price cutting, is likely to struggle from 2013, as the impact of government cuts and economic problems in the UK and broader Eurozone continue to be felt. The market is likely see growth fall from the current 3% per annum, and this is unlikely to rise much above 1% over the next few years with market value reaching an estimated £1.4bn by 2016.
