Bathroom and Kitchen Pods Market Report - UK 2012-2016 AnalysisAMA ResearchSeptember 24, 2012 68 Pages - SKU: AJLA4886298 |
Additional Information
The bathroom and kitchen pods market has an estimated value of around £114.6 million at Manufacturers Selling Prices (MSP) in 2011. having fallen substantially from 2008, Market performance over the last three years has continued to be relatively difficult, with some major suppliers exiting the market. reflecting the continued impact of the UK economic downturn on the construction industry.A number of end use sectors for the bathroom and kitchen pods market have experienced funding problems, either through difficulties in raising finance for PFI schemes, or from declining business and consumer confidence. This has resulted in project deferrals and cancellations which have had a destabilising influence on certain sectors of the overall market.
Subsequently, the period 2010-2012 has been characterised by a reduction in the number of pod suppliers and manufacturers, reflecting the adverse impact of the construction downturn and global financial crisis.
While the market for bathroom and kitchen pods has experienced a significant decline in recent years, demand from the hotel sector, student accommodation healthcare and MoD has remained fairly strong.
The prefabricated pods market is dominated by shower-room pods (50%) and bathroom pods (45%). The market for kitchen pods has been affected by the downturn in the housing sector.
The majority of pods are manufactured from either concrete (30%); steel frame (34%) or glass reinforced plastic and composite (36%). Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Concrete pods are heavy, typically weighing 2-3 tonnes, but they offer the possibility of greater structural rigidity and high quality finishes. Steel framed pods offer a light weight solution whilst maintaining rigidity. GRP pods are very light weight and so have less structural rigidity but can offer advantages in terms of hygiene and leak resistance.
Key application areas for bathroom and kitchen pods include student accommodation, defence, healthcare, hotels and domestic residential housing. The market for prefabricated pods in the domestic residential sector is greatest in social housing, in affordable housing schemes and in flats/apartment blocks.
Advantages offered by pods were initially due to the shortage of skills and the cost advantages that these represented. More recently, sources indicate that the key advantage of installing pods lies in the time gained onsite during construction and the reduction in the disruption caused. This should help to underpin contractor interest and provide underlying market growth.
Forecasts for 2012 remain relatively depressed with a further 2% decrease in the market by value expected. The bathroom and kitchen pods market is expected to be constrained while housebuilding levels remain at historically low levels and major projects such as the MOD single living accommodation draw to a close. In the medium to longer term, the bathroom and kitchen pods market is expected to experience a modest increase, and by 2014, the market value is forecast to be around £117 million at MSP. In 2016, it is estimated that the UK bathroom and kitchen pods market will be worth just under £133 million, which represents some growth but remains less than the market was worth in 2006.
